Early Life

Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Obot Akpabio raised Godswill Akpabio. He was born on December 9, 1962. His mother reared him after his father died while he was young.

Akpabio completed his elementary education at Methodist Elementary School in Ukana and his senior education at the Federal Government College in Port Harcourt before enrolling in law school at the University of Calabar, where he graduated in 1987.

He graduated from the Lagos Law School in 1988 and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar the following year.

Career

Following his admission to the bar, Akpabio worked briefly as a teacher and then as an Associate Partner with Paul Usoro and Co., a major Nigerian law firm.

He also worked with EMIS Telecoms Limited, a forerunner in fixed wireless telecommunications in Lagos, Nigeria. He was promoted to Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company in 2002.

In 2002, Akpabio was appointed Akwa Ibom State’s Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources and later Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In 2006, he was also appointed Commissioner for Lands and Housing.

Godswill Akpabio successfully ran for governor of Akwa Ibom State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April 2007.

Akpabio ran for re-election as governor of Akwa Ibom State in the 2011 general elections and was re-elected.

After completing his second term as governor, Akpabio ran for the April 2015 elections; he ran for the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial Seat and won on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform.
He is the Senate Minority Leader at the moment.

Personal Life

He is a devout Catholic Christian. Godswill is married to Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the founder of the FLEI.

This non-governmental organization provides a platform for concentrating development efforts on families to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Akpabio and his wife are the parents of four daughters and one son.

Senator Akpabio has been awarded the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON).
