Personal Life

In her personal life, Lesley Stahl found happiness and fulfillment alongside her husband, Aaron Latham. The couple met through mutual friends and soon forged a deep connection based on shared values and interests.

Their bond grew stronger over time, leading to their marriage in 1977. Together, they have weathered life’s challenges and celebrated its joys, building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Stahl and Latham are proud parents to two daughters, Taylor Stahl Latham and Jamie Stahl Latham. As devoted parents, they prioritized their family’s well-being and supported their daughters as they pursued their own passions and aspirations. However, Lesley’s life took a dramatic turn after her beloved husband passed away in 2022 from COVID-19 complications.

Throughout her 50-year career in journalism, Stahl has reported on significant events in United States history such as the Watergate scandal in 1972, President Nixon’s impeachment hearings in 1974, the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan, and the 1991 Gulf War.

She also covered U.S./Russian summit meetings, economic summits of industrialized countries, national political conventions, and election nights.

In addition, she investigated enhanced interrogation methods against Al Qaeda during the Iraq War, Saddam Hussein’s cruelty towards Iraqi children, practices within Guantánamo Bay, and tensions in the Middle East and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Stahl began her television broadcasting career at Boston’s original Channel 5, WHDH-TV, and joined CBS News in 1971. She credits her hire to the inclusion of women in the Federal Communications Commission’s affirmative action mandate. Stahl was a mentor to CBS news producer Susan Zirinsky.

In 2007, Stahl gained attention for her interview with the then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy for a 60 Minutes segment, during which the President abruptly ended the conversation and walked out, referring to it as “stupid” and a “big mistake”. Sarkozy criticized Stahl for questions about his wife, Cecilia, and two weeks after the interview, the couple announced their divorce.

In 2008, she was a founding member of wowOwow.com, a website for women over 40 to discuss culture, politics, and gossip, which later merged into PureWow in 2010.

In 2014, she worked as a correspondent for Years of Living Dangerously, a documentary series about climate change. Her second book, Becoming Grandma: The Joys and Science of the New Grandparenting, which details her own experiences with her grandchildren, was published in 2016.

Trump cut short the interview and expressed his dissatisfaction on Twitter. On October 22, Trump released the full interview on Facebook ahead of its planned official release on 60 Minutes on October 25.
