She also covered U.S./Russian summit meetings, economic summits of industrialized countries, national political conventions, and election nights.

In addition, she investigated enhanced interrogation methods against Al Qaeda during the Iraq War, Saddam Hussein’s cruelty towards Iraqi children, practices within Guantánamo Bay, and tensions in the Middle East and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Stahl began her television broadcasting career at Boston’s original Channel 5, WHDH-TV, and joined CBS News in 1971. She credits her hire to the inclusion of women in the Federal Communications Commission’s affirmative action mandate. Stahl was a mentor to CBS news producer Susan Zirinsky.

Additionally, from 2002 to 2004, she was the host of 48 Hours Investigates. In 2002, Stahl made headlines when Al Gore made his first announcement on 60 Minutes that he would not run for president again in 2004.

When Katie Couric was hired, CBS News requested Stahl to reduce her salary by $500,000 to accommodate Couric’s salary, bringing her earnings down to $1.8 million.

In 2007, Stahl gained attention for her interview with the then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy for a 60 Minutes segment, during which the President abruptly ended the conversation and walked out, referring to it as “stupid” and a “big mistake”. Sarkozy criticized Stahl for questions about his wife, Cecilia, and two weeks after the interview, the couple announced their divorce.

In 2008, she was a founding member of wowOwow.com, a website for women over 40 to discuss culture, politics, and gossip, which later merged into PureWow in 2010.

In 2014, she worked as a correspondent for Years of Living Dangerously, a documentary series about climate change. Her second book, Becoming Grandma: The Joys and Science of the New Grandparenting, which details her own experiences with her grandchildren, was published in 2016.

During the 2020 United States presidential election campaign, Stahl conducted an interview with President Trump for a segment on 60 Minutes on October 20, 2020.

Trump cut short the interview and expressed his dissatisfaction on Twitter. On October 22, Trump released the full interview on Facebook ahead of its planned official release on 60 Minutes on October 25.
