His breakthrough came with the 1981 novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, which introduced the concept of Toontown, a world where cartoon characters and humans coexist. The idea was inspired by Saturday morning television commercials, and the novel’s innovative premise caught the attention of Walt Disney Studios, which optioned the rights in 1983.
The 1988 film adaptation Who Framed Roger Rabbit, directed by Robert Zemeckis, became a cultural phenomenon and won four Academy Awards. Wolf subsequently wrote two sequels, Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit? (1991) and Who Wacked Roger Rabbit? (2013), as well as the spin-off Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business (2024).
In 2001, he sued Disney for unpaid royalties and ultimately prevailed in 2005, receiving between $180,000 and $400,000. In 2024, he successfully regained full ownership of all his characters through the 35-Year Copyright Reversion Clause and is now developing a 12-part television series and a live-action Jessica Rabbit film adaptation.
