James Macpherson was born on October 27, 1736, in Ruthven near Kingussie, Inverness-shire. He was born to Andrew Macpherson and Ellen Macpherson. His ethnicity was Scottish. He grew up in a Gaelic-speaking Highland community, alongside siblings whose names are unknown.
