Johanna Spyri was born on June 12, 1827, in the rural village of Hirzel, overlooking Lake Zurich. Her parents, Johann Jakob Heusser, a doctor, and Meta Heusser-Schweizer, a poet, raised her in a large, devout Protestant family with five siblings.
Her ethnicity was Swiss-German. She spent summers in the Alps near Chur with relatives — experiences that later inspired Heidi. She received private tutoring at home and later attended boarding school in Zurich, where she learned French and piano, but she received no formal higher education.
Career
Spyri began writing in her 40s. Her first story appeared in 1871, but worldwide fame came with Heidi’s Years of Wandering and Learning (1880) and its sequel Heidi Makes Use of What She Has Learned (1881).
She wrote over 50 stories and novels, mostly for children and young adults, often featuring mountain life, faith, and moral growth. Despite her success, she remained modest and donated much of her income to charity.

Personal Life
Johanna married lawyer and city clerk Bernhard Spyri in 1852 and moved to Zurich. They had one son, Bernhard Diethelm, who died of tuberculosis in 1884 — the same year her husband passed away.
Devastated by the double loss, she never remarried and lived quietly with friends and relatives in Zurich until her death from cancer on July 7, 1901. She is buried in Zurich’s Sihlfeld Cemetery. Her height was not publicly disclosed.
