Max Frisch was born on May 15, 1911, in Zurich, Switzerland. His parents, Franz Bruno Frisch, an architect, and Karolina Bettina Wildermuth, raised him alongside his older sister, Emma.
His ethnicity was Swiss-German. He initially studied German literature at the University of Zurich (1930–1933) but abandoned it after his father’s death.
From 1936–1941, he studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), graduating and briefly practicing before turning fully to writing after the success of his first novel.
Career
Frisch gained fame with plays The Firebugs (1953) and Andorra (1961), and novels I’m Not Stiller (1954), Homo Faber (1957), and Montauk (1975). His diary-style works Sketchbook 1946–1949 and Sketchbook 1966–1971 blended fiction and autobiography.
A major figure in post-war theatre of the absurd, he received the Georg Büchner Prize (1958), the Heinrich Heine Prize (1989), and numerous international honours. His architectural legacy includes the Letzigraben outdoor pool in Zurich (1949).
