Lalela Mswane started her modeling career after she contested in the Matric Experience 2015 pageantry, where she finished as the first runner-up.

On the 6th of July 2021, she made the list of the 30 models that were shortlisted for the face of South Africa.  Following a series of interviews and public voting, she was announced on the 3rd of August as one of the ten models who advanced to the finale. The finale of the face of miss South Africa 2021 was held on the 16th of October at the Grand Western Arena of cape town.

After further thug of war between the contestants, Lalela Mswane progressed to the top 5.

After all the contestants were made to compete in a question and answer round, Lalela Mswane was selected as one of the three finalists. After the last round of competition, Lalela Mswane eventually became crowned Miss South Africa 2021.

The following month after becoming the face of South Africa, she was selected to represent the country for the Miss Universe in December; But things took a different turn after the South African government withdrew their support from the competition because the competition would be held In Israel.
