Robert Siegel was born on June 26, 1947, in New York City, New York, United States. He is the son of Joseph Siegel and Edith Siegel, and he grew up in Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village.
Robert Siegel is Jewish. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1964 and studied at Columbia University, earning his Columbia College degree in 1968. He also attended Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for one year.
Career
Robert Siegel began his broadcasting career while studying at Columbia University, working at the college radio station WKCR-FM and anchoring coverage of the 1968 Columbia demonstrations. He later worked at WGLI Radio in Babylon, New York, before joining WRVR in New York as a reporter, host, and news director.
The WRVR team received an Armstrong Award for its “Rockefeller’s Drug Law” series.
Robert Siegel joined NPR in 1976 as a newscaster and subsequently held several editorial and management positions. In 1979, he opened NPR’s first overseas bureau in London and remained there until 1983.
He later directed NPR’s News and Information Department before becoming a host of All Things Considered in 1987. He remained in the role for three decades, reporting from around the world and conducting extensive interviews.
Siegel retired from the program on January 5, 2018. In 2018, he received Washington State University’s Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award.
