Early Life & Education

In Indianapolis, Indiana, David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, to Dorothy Mengering, who served as the church secretary for the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, and his father, Harry Joe Letterman, was a florist.

Gretchen Letterman and Janice Letterman are sisters of David Letterman. On the north side of Indianapolis, he grew up. He was a model car and racer enthusiast. His father suffered a heart attack when he was a child. 

David Letterman was so negatively impacted by this that he grew up constantly worrying about losing his father. Sadly, his father died in 1973 at the age of 57 from a second heart attack. He was a stock boy at the neighborhood Atlas Supermarket while he was a student at Broad Ripple High School

Despite his desire to enroll at Indiana University, he was forced to attend Ball State University instead due to his poor grades and graduated in 1969. He began his career as a newscaster at the student-run radio station at his college.
