Early Life

Alex Otti, a member of the Labour Party, was born into the family of the late Pastor and Mrs Lazarus Weze Otti.

He is an ethnic Abia from Umuru, Umuehim village in the Ehi Na Uguru Ancient Kingdom, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

Otti completed his secondary schooling at Ngwa High School in Aba and Okpuala Ngwa Technical School, where he also earned his West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) diploma. Otti earned the top grade in his high school graduating class.

He then continued to the University of Port Harcourt to finish his undergraduate degree. In 1988, Alex Otti earned a first-class degree in economics.

He graduated with a master’s from the University of Lagos in 1994. Additionally, Otti took several courses at prestigious international institutions, such as the Executive Development Programs at Wharton, Stanford, and Columbia Business Schools.

Career

After graduating from college, Alex Otti started working in banking in 1989. First, he worked for the Nigerian International Bank’s operating division, a Citibank New York subsidiary.

After that, he worked at Nigerian Intercontinental Bank, where he had positions in the corporate banking sector and the treasury and financial services section.

He joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers) in 1992 and worked his way up to senior management there.

Later, he transferred to the United Bank of Africa (UBA), where he was the manager of the South Division’s corporate banking division. He started working as the deputy general manager at First Bank of Nigeria, PLC, in May 2001.

Otti was charged with expanding the bank’s oil and gas business while employed at UBA. He oversaw the expansion of the bank’s energy sector while at First Bank.

He was given a promotion to deputy general manager in 2004. Alex Otti was appointed Executive Director of Commercial Banking a year later.

Following his success in several Nigerian commercial banks, Otti went to Diamond Bank as group managing director and chief executive officer in March 2011.

On October 24, 2014, Otti took Uzoma Dozie over as his replacement as CEO and General Manager Director.

After leaving the banking industry, Otti became Abia State’s governor under the banner of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

However, he was defeated by Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This occurred when the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld the 2016 election of Ikpeazu as governor and overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision.

As a result of his success in the 2015 governor’s race, Alex Otti ran for office again on March 11, 2023, although this time on the Labour Party’s platform.

On March 22, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed him the victor of the Abia State governor’s race.
