Bassey received his primary education at Corona School Apapa, Lagos, and then went to Federal Government College, Sokoto, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1977.

He furthered his studies at Greylands College, Isles of Wight, United Kingdom, and received his A-Level certificate in 1979. Bassey then pursued higher education at the University of Wales, Cardiff, where he graduated with a 1st BSc in Engineering Production and Economics in 1984.
