John Pesutto was the fourth child among five born to Antonietta Pesutto and Luigino Pesutto. Luigino, his orphan father, immigrated to Australia in 1961 from Calabria, southern Italy, to pursue better opportunities amidst postwar Italy’s challenges. Two years later, his mother, Antonietta, who didn’t speak English, followed alone aboard the Galileo Galilei, which arrived at Port Melbourne in 1963. The couple married just days after her arrival.

As for his education, John Pesutto attended Catholic Regional College Traralgon from 1983 to 1988. Later on, he pursued a Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Commerce degree at the prestigious University of Melbourne.
