He grew up with three siblings: Louisa Johnston Castle, Ann Castle Boswell, and James Manderson Castle III. Castle attended Tower Hill School, graduating in 1957, before earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Hamilton College in 1961.
He later received a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1964. He was of White American ancestry with English and Scottish roots and was raised in the Episcopal Christian faith.
Career
Mike Castle began his career in the mid-1960s when he moved back to Wilmington and joined the local law firm Connolly, Bove and Lodge as an associate attorney.
He balanced his private legal practice with a strong desire for public service, which led him to serve as Delaware’s Deputy Attorney General before he successfully ran for a seat in the Delaware House of Representatives in 1966. He quickly moved up the political ranks by securing a seat in the Delaware Senate in 1968, where he spent eight years and eventually served as the minority leader for the Republican party.
Mike Castle experienced a massive surge in his political career when he was elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Delaware in 1980 alongside Governor Pete du Pont. He used this executive platform to build his reputation as a pragmatic reformer, which helped him easily win the gubernatorial election in 1984 to become the Governor of Delaware.
During his two terms as governor, he earned praise from both political parties for balancing the state budget, boosting the local economy, and reforming the state’s welfare and educational systems to help working-class families.
Mike Castle chose to move into national politics in 1992 when he successfully ran to become Delaware’s single, at-large representative in the United States House of Representatives. He served in Congress for nine consecutive terms from 1993 until 2011, during which time he championed major pieces of legislation like the 50 State Quarters Program and the historic No Child Left Behind education act.
He retired from public service after a historic career and returned to the private sector as a senior counsel at the law firm DLA Piper, where he remained a highly respected voice on public policy and state leadership until his passing in August 2025.
