He steadily rose through the party ranks, serving as organizing secretary and assistant secretary-general before succeeding Low Thia Khiang as secretary-general in 2018.
Under his leadership, the Workers’ Party secured its strongest election result in 2020, winning ten elected parliamentary seats. The achievement led to his appointment as Singapore’s first officially recognized Leader of the Opposition, where he became known for his measured parliamentary speeches and policy debates.
