Rishi Sunak, the United Kingdom’s current Chancellor of the Exchequer, was born on May 12, 1980, in the thriving city of Southampton, England. His parents, born in East Africa, had bravely decided to relocate to England in search of a better life for themselves and their children. 

Sunak‘s father, Yashvir Sunak, was a highly respected general practitioner, while his mother, Usha Sunak, dedicated her profession to pharmacy. As fate would have it, Rishi was blessed with two younger siblings and holds the honor of being the eldest among them.

One interesting fact about him is that he has a sister named Raakhi Williams. Additionally, he was privileged to attend Winchester College, a prestigious private boarding school.

Career

Rishi Sunak entered politics in 2015 after winning the Richmond (Yorks) Conservative MP election. He was appointed the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in 2018 and the Chief Secretary of the Treasury in 2019. He assumed the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.

Sunak, as Chancellor, was responsible for overseeing the UK’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he implemented various measures, such as the layoff and Eat Out to Help Out schemes, to support businesses and individuals.

In October 2022, Boris Johnson‘s leadership prompted Rishi Sunak to resign as Chancellor. Consequently, Sunak embarked on a campaign to secure the leadership of the Conservative Party. His efforts proved successful, as he emerged victorious in the leadership election and was subsequently sworn in as Prime Minister on October 25, 2022.
