He was appointed the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in 2018 and the Chief Secretary of the Treasury in 2019. He assumed the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.

Sunak, as Chancellor, was responsible for overseeing the UK’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he implemented various measures, such as the layoff and Eat Out to Help Out schemes, to support businesses and individuals.

In October 2022, Boris Johnson‘s leadership prompted Rishi Sunak to resign as Chancellor. Consequently, Sunak embarked on a campaign to secure the leadership of the Conservative Party. His efforts proved successful, as he emerged victorious in the leadership election and was subsequently sworn in as Prime Minister on October 25, 2022.
