Early Life and Education
Brandon Nimmo was born on March 27, 1993, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ron, a certified public accountant from La Junta, Colorado, and Patti Nimmo. He grew up alongside his older brother, Bryce, who played college baseball at the University of Nebraska, and his older sister, Kristen, who excelled at soccer.
His childhood dream was to become a bull rider, and he grew up a passionate fan of the Colorado Rockies. Nimmo attended Cheyenne East High School, but because Wyoming is one of the few states without high school baseball, he played American Legion Baseball for Post 6.
In 2010, he batted .448 with 15 home runs and 34 stolen bases in 70 games, earning co-MVP honors at the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field.
He committed to play college baseball at the University of Arkansas, but his performance on the summer circuit elevated his draft stock enough that he never made it to campus.
He is of mixed Scottish, English, Irish, and Welsh descent and was raised in the Christian faith
Career
Brandon Nimmo’s professional journey began when the New York Mets selected him with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, making him the highest-drafted player in Wyoming history. He signed for a $2.1 million bonus and climbed methodically through the minor leagues, earning a selection to the 2013 All-Star Futures Game.
His breakthrough came on June 26, 2016, when he made his MLB debut against the Atlanta Braves, and he recorded his first major-league hits the following day against the Washington Nationals.
After exceeding rookie limits in 2017, Nimmo established himself as a fixture in the Mets’ lineup in 2018, posting a .263 batting average with a .404 on-base percentage and 17 home runs, finishing among the league leaders in on-base percentage and walks.
Over the following seasons, Nimmo developed into one of the most complete and durable outfielders in baseball. He led the National League in triples in 2022 and consistently ranked among the top players in the league by wins above replacement, finishing 28th in 2018, 31st in 2022, and 44th in 2023.
Despite never earning an All-Star selection, his elite on-base skills, improved defense, and clubhouse leadership made him a cornerstone of the Mets’ roster. In December 2022, he signed an eight-year, $162 million contract extension, the largest free-agent deal in franchise history at the time.
He was named the Mets’ recipient of the MLB Players Alumni Association Heart & Hustle Award in 2018 and 2022, and he played for Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
His career reflects a steady ascent from an untested Wyoming prospect to one of the most reliable and respected players in the National League.
