Early Life & Education

LeBron James, a member of the NBA All-Stars, and his then-girlfriend Savannah James, then 18 years old, welcomed their first child, Bronny James, on October 6, 2004. Both of his parents reared him, and they later wed in 2013.

He has a brother named Bryce Maximus James and a sister called Zhuri James. His grandparents are Anthony McClelland, Gloria Marie James, JK Brinson, and Jennifer Brinson.

He participated in a variety of sports as a child, such as a basketball and a game of soccer. However, his father forbade him from participating in ice hockey or football due to safety reasons. By 2014, he had appeared in basketball highlight videos that garnered widespread media attention.

Bronny James led Old Trail School, where he finished middle school, to victory in the Independent School League tournament in February 2018 in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio. Before entering high school, he played basketball for several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. When he was nine years old, John Calipari, the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, watched him play for the Miami City Ballers at an AAU tournament for fourth graders.

He guided the Gulf Coast Blue Chips AAU team to victory in the fourth-grade division of the League Dallas/Hype Sports Summer Jam in June 2015. Bronny James assisted the North Coast Blue Chips in winning the John Lucas All-Star Weekend championship in Houston in March 2018.

His Blue Chips won the under-13 championship at the NY2LA Swish ‘N Dish competition in Wisconsin on April 2, 2018, going undefeated. He played for the same squad in the Jr. National Basketball Association (NBA) Midwest Championships in June against players in the ninth grade and made it to the quarterfinals.

Bronny James joined the AAU team Strive for Greatness at the under-16 Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) in Indianapolis in April 2019, despite being younger than most of the opposition at age 14. There, he faced several highly sought-after recruits and received praise from scouts.

Bronny James enrolled in Santa Monica, California’s private K–12 Crossroads School on August 6, 2018. Due to California state regulations, he could not join the varsity team immediately. He scored 27 points in his first game for the school on December 3, 2018, leading his team to a 61-48 victory over Culver City Middle School

Career

Bronny James moved to Sierra Canyon School, a private K–12 institution in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, on May 29, 2019, for his first year of high school. He enrolled at the school alongside his brother Bryce Maximus James and incoming senior Zaire Wade, who is the son of his father’s longtime basketball teammate Dwyane Wade

Brandon Boston Jr. and Ziaire Williams, two five-star recruits, joined Bronny James at Sierra Canyon in the ensuing months. The team was one of the top high school basketball teams going into the season, and 15 of its games were broadcast on ESPN networks. He made his high school debut on November 21, 2019, scoring 10 points off the bench in a rout of Montgomery High School

Bronny James beat his father’s alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, on December 14 and was named the game’s most valuable player (MVP) with 15 points, including the game-winning layup. He had a season-high 17 points on January 15, 2020, in a victory over Viewpoint School. He was the lone member of Sierra Canyon to play in all 34 games as a rookie, averaging 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game.

He tore his meniscus in his second season, necessitating surgery to fix it. Thad Matta, the head coach at Ohio State at the time, made a joke about having to give Bronny James a scholarship when he was nine years old. He was already offered basketball scholarships by colleges before 2015, albeit the exact names were kept a secret.

In his 247Sports.com recruiting profile as of 2021, he lists Kentucky as his top school choice, followed by Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, and UCLA. Kentucky is the only school to have extended a scholarship offer. At the beginning of his junior year, 247Sports.com lowered Bronny James‘ placement in its prospect rankings from 27 to 52. In his junior year, he rose on ESPN’s ranking from 49 to 43 after beginning his freshman year ranked in the 20s.

Bronny James‘ position in Rivals.com’s prospect rankings declined from 29 to 60 over the summer of 2022. Several institutions, including Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, UCLA, and USC, expressed interest in August 2022. He received a proposal from Memphis and Penny Hardaway on August 19, 2022.
