Early Life and Education
Charles Pic was born and raised in Montélimar, Drôme, France, on 15 February 1990. Of French origin and raised in a Christian household, he is the son of Jean-Christophe Pic, president of the FNTR, France’s largest transport and logistics company, and Delphine Pic.
He grew up alongside his younger brother, Arthur, who also became a racing driver, and his godfather is former Formula One driver Éric Bernard. Details about his formal education have not been publicly disclosed.
Pic entered karting at the relatively late age of thirteen with his godfather’s support and quickly achieved strong results in French and Italian championships before making his single-seater debut in 2006.
Career
Charles Pic began his professional racing career in 2006 with a third-place finish and rookie championship honours in the French Formula Renault Campus series.
He progressed to the Formula Renault Eurocup and French Formula Renault championships, scoring multiple wins and top-three championship finishes.
In 2008 he stepped up to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series with Tech 1 Racing, winning at Monaco and Le Mans on his way to sixth in the standings, and improved to third overall in 2009 with two more victories.
He joined the GP2 Asia Series and main GP2 Series in 2010 with Arden International, winning on debut in both championships, and moved to Barwa Addax for 2011, finishing fourth overall with two wins and three pole positions. His Formula One debut came in 2012 with Marussia, partnering Timo Glock.
He started all 20 races that season, with a best finish of 12th in Brazil, though the team’s MR01 car was uncompetitive and he finished the year without points.
For 2013 he switched to Caterham on a multi-year deal, racing alongside Giedo van der Garde.
Despite an improved chassis, the team struggled for pace and Pic again went point-less, ending his Formula One career with 39 starts and no championship points. He was released by Caterham at the end of 2013 and became a reserve driver for Lotus in 2014.
Following his Formula One exit, Pic competed in the inaugural Formula E season in 2014–15, finishing fourth on debut in Beijing for Andretti Autosport and scoring points for China Racing in Monaco.
He retired from professional racing after the 2015 season and moved into business and asset management, becoming CEO of the resources department at the Charles André Group, his family’s logistics company.
In February 2022, he acquired full ownership of the DAMS racing team, a historic French outfit with 15 drivers’ titles and 16 teams’ championships in junior formulae.
Under his leadership, DAMS has continued to compete in FIA Formula 2 and Formula E, nurturing young talent and maintaining its reputation as a cornerstone of French motorsport.
His legacy is defined by his transition from a pay-driver label in Formula One to a respected team owner and businessman.
