Dirk Werner Nowitzki, a former professional basketball player from Germany, is the special advisor for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.

Early Life

Dirk Werner Nowitzki was born in Würzburg, Germany. His father, JörgWerner, played handball and represented Germany at the highest international level.

His mother, Helga Nowitzki (née Bredenbröcker), was a professional basketball player. Silke Nowitzki, his older sister, is currently employed by the NBA in international TV. She was a local track and field champion before turning to basketball.

As a tall child, Nowitzki frequently towered above his classmates by a foot or more. At first, he played handball and tennis.

As a rated junior tennis player, he broke into the German youth tennis circuit. Still, he eventually switched to basketball because he was sick of being branded a “freak” because of his height.

The 15-year-old caught the eye of former German international basketball player Holger Geschwindner after he joined the local DJK Würzburg.

Geschwindner immediately recognized the young player’s potential and volunteered to train him one-on-one two to three times a week.


While Dirk Nowitzki didn’t pursue college basketball in the United States, he did receive a well-rounded education in Germany.

Nowitzki completed his Abitur exams at the Röntgen Gymnasium Grammar School in Würzburg, Germany.

Nowitzki began playing basketball at a young age and quickly became a skilled player. He played professionally in Germany before being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1998 NBA Draft.
