James Thompson first saw the light of day on 16 December 1978 in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England, to parents referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Thompson. He grew up in Rochdale playing rugby league and was regarded as a talented player who briefly considered a professional rugby career.
