Early Life and Education
Jurickson Profar was born on February 20, 1993, in Willemstad, Curaçao, to Chesmond and Judeska Profar, and grew up alongside his brothers Juremi and Jurdrick, both of whom also pursued professional baseball.
From a young age, Profar was immersed in the island’s baseball culture, representing Curaçao at the Little League World Series in 2004 and 2005; he helped the Pabao Little League team win the 2004 championship and returned to the final in 2005.
His formal education is not publicly known, as he signed with the Texas Rangers at 16 and began his professional career instead of attending college. He is of Afro-Curaçaoan descent and was raised in the Roman Catholic faith.
Career
Jurickson Profar’s professional journey began on July 2, 2009, when the Texas Rangers signed him as an international free agent for a $1.55 million bonus.
He tore through the minors, earning South Atlantic League MVP honors in 2011 and a selection to the All-Star Futures Game, and he was ranked baseball’s No. 1 prospect before the 2013 season.
He made his MLB debut on September 2, 2012, and homered in his first major-league at-bat, but a shoulder injury sidelined him for two full seasons and stalled his ascent.
He spent years as a utility player in Texas before a 2019 trade to Oakland and a subsequent move to San Diego, where he transitioned to left field.
Profar’s breakthrough arrived in 2024 with the Padres, when he set career highs across the board—a .280 batting average, .380 on-base percentage, .459 slugging percentage, 24 home runs, 85 RBIs, and 158 hits—earning his first All-Star nod as the National League’s starting left fielder and his first Silver Slugger Award.
He finished 14th in NL MVP voting and posted 4.3 fWAR, the most among primary NL left fielders. That performance secured a three-year, $42 million contract with the Atlanta Braves, but his tenure was marred by a PED suspension that cost him half of 2025 and all of 2026.
His legacy remains defined by rare versatility—he has appeared at every position except pitcher and catcher—and a late-career peak that few saw coming.
