Career

Rashed Al-Naimi began his rally career in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, competing in the Group N category for showroom-derived cars.

In 2015, he drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX and Evo X for the QMMF team, securing a class N4 victory in Qatar and accumulating fifty points in the class championship.

His performances that season earned him a reputation as one of the region’s emerging talents, and he steadily built experience across events in Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Lebanon.

By 2016, he had upgraded to a Subaru Impreza WRX STi and was engaged in a fierce season-long battle for the MERC 2 title with Lebanon’s eventual champion Rodolphe Asmar, finishing third in the MERC 2 standings with sixty-four points and fifteen stage wins.

That same year, he claimed a podium finish at the Qatar International Rally, finishing third overall and first in Group N.

Al-Naimi’s breakthrough came in February 2017 at the Qatar International Rally, the opening round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship.

Driving a JRM-built Subaru Impreza WRX STi for the Autotek team alongside Portuguese co-driver Hugo Magalhães, he was targeting a win in the MERC 2 category rather than an outright victory.

However, when defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah retired with engine problems on the penultimate stage, Al-Naimi inherited the lead and held on to claim the biggest win of his career, despite suffering a flat tyre and suspension damage on the final stage.

The victory gave him first place in MERC 2, three special stage wins, and a nine-point lead in the regional championship.

“The target here was the win in MERC 2, but to win the Qatar Rally is a complete shock to me and changes my entire strategy for the rest of the season,” he said afterward.

In the years that followed, Al-Naimi continued to compete in MERC events and remained a respected competitor in the Group N ranks.

His 2018 campaign included an entry in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, though his appearances became less frequent as newer Rally2 and R5 machinery increasingly dominated the front of the field.

He maintained a presence in Qatari and regional rallying, and his 2017 victory in Qatar remains a landmark result for a driver who operated on a lower budget than the championship’s leading professionals.

His career stands as a testament to the competitiveness of privateer drivers in Middle Eastern rallying, and he is remembered as a driver capable of seizing opportunities when they arise.
