Arrest of NLC President Joe Ajaero Sparks Tensions and Strike Threat

September 9, 2024 0 Posted By Kaptain Kush

This morning at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) while preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom. The arrest has sparked widespread speculation and outrage, with unconfirmed rumors suggesting Ajaero might be under investigation for harboring an international spy. The DSS has not provided any official statement regarding this specific allegation.

The arrest occurs amid escalating tensions between labor unions and the government. Just weeks ago, on August 19, 2024, Ajaero was questioned by the Nigerian police over allegations including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime—charges he and the NLC have strongly denied.

Following his brief detention and release on August 29, during which he was accompanied by notable figures such as Femi Falana and Deji Adeyanju, the NLC warned that further actions against Ajaero could trigger a nationwide strike. Today’s arrest may be the spark for the threatened industrial action.

Social media has been filled with reactions ranging from shock and solidarity with Ajaero to anticipation of the potential economic impact of a nationwide strike. Posts on social media confirmed the arrest, with some users like @Laurestar supporting the move, while others like @themiraofor reported the incident without taking sides, reflecting the polarized reactions.

The NLC, along with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has previously shown its readiness to mobilize in response to Ajaero’s encounters with law enforcement. The unions are known for their ability to disrupt national economic activities, having organized major protests and strikes in the past over various labor rights issues.

Although the NLC has not officially called for a strike, the atmosphere among labor leaders and workers suggests a shutdown could be imminent. The government’s response to Ajaero‘s arrest, particularly if connected to the rumored espionage charges, will play a critical role in shaping the labor unions’ next steps.
