Ruth Otabor, the elder sister of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 7 winner Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has tragically passed away after being involved in a devastating road accident with a Dangote Group truck.

The heartbreaking incident, which occurred on August 13, 2025, near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, has stirred nationwide grief, sparked demands for justice, and reignited urgent conversations about road safety in Nigeria.

Ruth, a fresh graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, was struck by the truck just six days after her graduation ceremony—a milestone that had brought immense joy and pride to her family. The accident happened in a pedestrian-heavy area, leaving her with critical injuries that led to the amputation of one leg.

She was rushed to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, where she battled for survival for over two weeks before succumbing to her injuries on August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m.

Her passing was confirmed by the Otabor family in an emotional statement expressing deep sorrow and appreciation for the outpouring of support.

Phyna, who had been at her sister’s bedside throughout the ordeal, broke down in tears as she shared a heartfelt eulogy on social media. Videos and posts from fans captured her raw grief, emphasizing the close bond between the sisters.

Phyna, born June 2, 1997, in Edo State, rose to fame as the winner of BBNaija’s “Level Up” edition in 2022. Known for her vibrant personality, hype skills, and outspoken nature, she has since built a thriving career as an actress, entrepreneur, and influencer.

Ruth, meanwhile, was celebrated by family and peers as a brilliant, ambitious young woman with a bright future that was tragically cut short.

The accident has ignited outrage across Nigeria, with the hashtag #JusticeForRuth trending online as fans, celebrities, and activists call for accountability. Prominent voices, including activist Omoyele Sowore and Edo State’s SDG adviser Sally Suleiman, visited the family and offered condolences. Suleiman, who met Phyna at the hospital, praised Ruth’s bravery and promised ongoing support.

The Dangote Group, owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote, issued a statement expressing sadness over Ruth’s death, confirming that they had been assisting the family financially and medically since the accident, and pledging full cooperation with investigations.

Authorities have since launched a probe into the incident amid mounting calls for stricter regulations on heavy trucks in urban and school zones. Commentators argue that Nigeria should adopt international best practices—such as restrictions on large vehicles during peak hours—to reduce avoidable road tragedies.

As preparations for Ruth’s burial continue, tributes are pouring in nationwide. Phyna’s loyal fanbase, “Phynation,” has organized virtual vigils and fundraisers in her honour, while fellow BBNaija alumni and influencers have expressed solidarity.

Ruth’s untimely death adds to Phyna’s personal struggles, yet her soundness remains a defining trait in the eyes of many.

Beyond the Otabor family, the tragedy highlights a national crisis: the Federal Road Safety Corps reports over 5,000 fatalities annually from road accidents in Nigeria. Ruth’s story is now a painful reminder of the human cost behind these statistics—and a rallying cry for urgent road safety reforms.
