Nigerian authorities have arrested a well-known Instagram influencer known as “KC Luxury,” alleging he served as the local coordinator of an international cocaine trafficking network that moved drugs from South America through Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency identified the suspect as Afolabi Kazeem Micheal, 49, who has built a following of about 700,000 people on Instagram by presenting himself online as a businessman dealing in gold, jewelry and other luxury goods. He was arrested on August 13 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos as he prepared to board a business class flight to Paris.

The arrest followed the seizure of 184.5 kilograms of cocaine, worth close to $28 million, that was intercepted at a courier logistics facility in Lagos on August 3. NDLEA chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa told journalists in Lagos that the cartel had expected to earn roughly 39 billion naira from the shipment, which the agency said was headed for the United Kingdom along with other destinations in Europe and Asia.

Marwa described the operation as one of the most significant narcotics investigations the agency has carried out in recent times. He said a special investigation team was set up after the initial seizure to trace those responsible, and that the trail eventually led to Micheal, whom investigators allege used his glamorous public image to mask a role as the network’s Nigerian “arrowhead.”

When he was detained, Micheal was reportedly carrying more than $12,840 in a mix of currencies, including euros, pounds and naira, along with jewelry the agency described as consistent with proceeds from illicit trade. A search of his apartment on Banana Island in Lagos, an upscale neighborhood, led to the recovery of vehicles, according to the NDLEA. Michael has not publicly commented on the allegations against him.

A second suspect, 33-year-old Lawal Mujab Kehinde, was also arrested in connection with the case. The NDLEA alleges Kehinde worked for the logistics company through which the cocaine was processed and that he packaged consignments for export in exchange for cash payments. Kehinde has not commented on the allegations and has not yet been charged in court.

The agency said its investigation has extended beyond Nigeria’s borders, with overseas law enforcement arresting other suspected members of the same network in the United Kingdom. Marwa pointed to the case as evidence of what international cooperation can achieve in combating organized drug trafficking, and he vowed that the agency would continue pursuing remaining members of the network.

Neither Michael nor Kehinde has been formally charged in court as of this writing, and the NDLEA has said investigations are ongoing.
