The Nigerian naira experienced a marginal decline against the US dollar in the black market today, with dealers quoting rates that reflect ongoing pressures from currency demand and limited supply in the parallel segment.

According to popular forex tracking platforms, the black market exchange rate stood at approximately ₦1,370 for buying and ₦1,382 for selling one US dollar as of midday trading. This represents a slight depreciation from recent sessions, where the naira had shown some resilience amid improved foreign reserves.

Market participants in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, and Kano reported steady activity, driven largely by importers seeking dollars for essential goods and individuals covering overseas obligations. The gap between the parallel rate and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official rate, which hovered around ₦1,375, remained narrow, indicating some alignment between the two windows following recent policy measures.

Analysts attribute the modest slide to persistent demand for foreign exchange ahead of key economic announcements, including updates on oil production and inflation data. Despite Nigeria’s foreign reserves climbing above $48 billion in recent weeks, experts note that structural challenges such as import dependency continue to weigh on the local currency.

Currency dealers advised caution, urging transactions only with verified agents to avoid unfavorable spreads. For businesses and travelers, the current levels translate to higher costs for dollar-denominated expenses, with 100 US dollars fetching around ₦137,000 to ₦138,200 in street trading.

As the day progresses, observers will watch for interventions or statements from monetary authorities that could influence volatility in the coming sessions. The naira’s performance remains a critical barometer for broader economic stability in Africa’s largest economy.
