Kannada Icon Dwarakish, Master of Laughter, Passes at 81

Bengaluru: The Kannada film world is in mourning as it bids adieu to the cherished actor, director, and producer Dwarakish, who peacefully passed away at 81 in the early hours of Tuesday at his home in Electronic City.

Dwarakish, born on August 19, 1942, in Hunsur, Mysuru district, was affectionately celebrated for his comedic genius stunning audiences throughout Karnataka.

According to insiders from the film fraternity, the esteemed actor had complained of breathing troubles on Monday night, gently slipping away in his slumber. Although age-related ailments are believed to be the cause, official confirmation is awaited.

Plans for the public viewing of his remains are still in the works, pending the family’s decision.

Embarking on his cinematic journey in 1964 as a comedic talent, Dwarakish quickly diversified into film production and direction. His maiden production endeavor, Mayor Mutthanna, featuring Dr. Rajkumar, marked the start of a prolific career that saw him produce nearly 48 films and direct close to 19.

Dwarakish‘s camaraderie with the late Dr. Vishnuvardhan remains legendary. Their partnership birthed unforgettable titles like Singaporenalli Raja Kulla, Kalla Kulla, and Apthamitra, the latter being their final collaboration in 2004.

Among his timeless creations as a producer and director are revered classics like Bhagyavantharu, Guru Shishyaru, Nee Bareda Kadambari, Africadallo Sheela, Dance Raja Dance, and the haunting Apthamitra.
