Tyla’s Tears: Overcoming Parental Doubts for Music Dream

Posted By Kaptain Kush

South African songstress Tyla, born Tyla Laura Seethal, bared her soul in a recent revelation about her challenging journey while convincing her parents to allow her to pursue a music career. The ‘Water‘ singer disclosed that her parents initially opposed her decision to become a musician, dismissing music as a hobby rather than a legitimate profession.

In an interview with Power 106 FM in Los Angeles, U.S.A, Tyla shared the emotional toll she endured to gain her parents’ approval. Despite their lack of strictness in her career choice, her parents firmly believed that music wasn’t a viable job option.

My parents weren’t really strict on what I’m doing, but they were strict about me going to the studio rather than getting a job. They were like, ‘Music is not a job. That it’s a hobby,” Tyla explained.

Undeterred by their reservations, Tyla admitted that she faced a significant challenge in convincing her parents, resulting in her resorting to tears daily to express her desire to pursue a music career: “So, I had to cry every day and tell them that I wanna do this. There’s nothing else I wanna do. It was difficult convincing them. It’s also because, in South Africa, it doesn’t happen to us. I’ve heard so many women who wanted to do music didn’t end up as they wanted to. So, my parents were just trying to protect me, which is fine, but I showed them that I want to do music by all means,Tyla shared.

Her persistence eventually paid off, as her parents relented, allowing her to follow her musical passion. Tyla‘s journey serves as a testament to the challenges faced by aspiring musicians, especially when met with familial skepticism. The emotional struggles she endured and the subsequent triumph over parental doubts highlight the dedication required to pursue one’s passion in the face of societal and familial norms.
