Rotimi Akeredolu’s ex-wife Betty Akeredolu Remarries into Akeredolu Family

In the Emeabiam Community of Owerri West Local Government Area in Imo State, the widow of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has been officially embraced back into the Akeredolu family fold. This significant decision was made by the Umuegeolu kindred, who symbolically handed her over to her late husband’s younger brother, Professor Wole Akeredolu.

Rotimi Akeredolu, who tragically passed away in December 2023 after a brave battle with cancer, was succeeded by his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and laid to rest in February 2024. Following his burial, the traditional Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony for Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the late governor’s widow, occurred on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Owerri West Local Government Area.

The ceremony was marked by solemnity and reverence as the Akeredolu family, in adherence to tradition, presented customary offerings of kolanuts, palm wine, and a she-goat to the Umuegeolu kindred. The event’s culmination came when Betty was formally handed over to Professor Wole Akeredolu, signifying the family’s desire to continue embracing her as one of their own even after her husband’s passing.

In his response, Professor Wole Akeredolu expressed profound gratitude to the Umuegeolu kindred and the entire Emeabiam Community for their unwavering support and hospitality. He reiterated the Akeredolu family’s steadfast commitment to providing care and support for Betty, acknowledging the solidarity shown during the mourning period and the interment ceremony held in Owo.

Throughout the ceremony, Betty, adorned in a somber black gown with white stripes and dark sunglasses, maintained a quiet presence, symbolizing the ongoing mourning period. Attendees included members of the Umuegeolu family, Nde Mgboto Emeabiam (Daughters of the soil), and Oha n’Ikoro Emeabiam (Elders Council), all gathered to witness and participate in this significant cultural event.

The Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony, deeply rooted in Igbo tradition, holds great significance as it marks the transition of a widow back to her husband’s family following his demise.
