What the Research on Birth Order Actually Shows About Personality
Decades of pop psychology promised firstborn leaders and neglected middle children. The largest studies to date, including a 2025 dataset of over 700,000 adults, tell a far more modest and more surprising story.
Birth order has produced more confident amateur psychology than almost any other idea in pop culture: firstborns are natural leaders, middle children are peacemakers, lastborns are charmers, only children are spoiled.
The actual research tells a narrower and more interesting story. Large, well-designed studies find that birth order has essentially no detectable effect on the broad personality traits people care most about (extraversion, emotional stability, openness), a small but real effect on self-reported intellect that favors firstborns, and, according to the most recent large-scale analysis, a modest effect on cooperativeness-related traits that actually favors middle-born and later-born children over firstborns.

The lesson is not that birth order is meaningless. It is that its influence is far smaller, more specific, and more inconsistent across studies than a century of psychology books and family lore has implied.
How Birth Order Psychology Got Its Reputation
The idea that sibling position shapes personality traces back to Alfred Adler, the early twentieth-century psychiatrist who broke from Sigmund Freud to build his own school of individual psychology.
Adler proposed that firstborns experience a kind of psychological dethronement when a younger sibling arrives, pushing them toward responsibility and achievement, while lastborns grow up pampered and middle children develop diplomacy skills from being squeezed on both sides.
It was a compelling narrative, and it aged into folk wisdom long before anyone tested it with the statistical tools psychology now considers standard.
The trouble is methodological, not conceptual. For decades, most birth order research compared between families: a firstborn from Family A against a lastborn from Family B. That design cannot separate birth order from the dozens of other things that differ between households, including family size, parental education, income, and era.
A firstborn from a two-child, college-educated family and a lastborn from a six-child, working-class family will show personality differences that have nothing to do with birth order and everything to do with everything else. Later researchers, working from large panel datasets that track siblings within the same family, have been able to strip out that noise, and the results have been considerably less dramatic than Adler’s framework suggested.
The Study That Reset the Field
The clearest modern answer came from a 2015 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Julia Rohrer, Boris Egloff, and Stefan Schmukle of the University of Leipzig. Combining three large national panel datasets from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, the researchers confirmed that firstborns score modestly higher on objectively measured intelligence and on self-reported intellect, but found no birth-order effects on extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, or imagination.
A companion commentary in the same issue, from Rodica Damian and Brent Roberts, went further, concluding that scientific evidence strongly suggests that birth order has little or no substantive relation to personality trait development and only a minuscule relation to the development of intelligence.
That paper functioned as something close to a field-wide correction. It did not claim birth order effects on the Big Five traits were small; it found none that survived rigorous testing. The intellect finding held up because it had been replicated across independent within-family samples using different national datasets, which is the standard that separates a genuine effect from noise.
The 2025 Study That Complicated the Picture Again
Birth order research rarely stays settled for long. A study published in PNAS in January 2025, led by Michael Ashton of Brock University and Kibeom Lee of the University of Calgary, revisited the question using the HEXACO personality model rather than the Big Five.
HEXACO adds a sixth dimension, Honesty-Humility, that captures traits like fairness, modesty, and lack of greed, alongside the more familiar emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness.
Drawing on more than 700,000 online adults, mainly from English-speaking countries, the researchers found that Honesty-Humility and Agreeableness both showed the highest means for middle-borns, followed in order by last-borns, firstborns, and only children, with differences between middles and onlys of d ≥ 0.20. Crucially, this was not a one-off result.
The same pattern replicated in a second, smaller sample of more than 70,000 people, which also allowed the researchers to test sibship size independently of birth order. There, Honesty-Humility and Agreeableness showed higher means with larger sibship sizes, with differences between sibship sizes of one and six-or-more reaching d = 0.30 and d = 0.36 respectively.
In practical terms, an effect size around d = 0.20 to 0.36 is real but modest, the kind of difference that shows up reliably in population-level statistics without being something a person could detect by observing a handful of individual siblings. It will not let anyone reliably guess a stranger’s birth order from a conversation, but it is large enough that researchers can no longer dismiss all personality-related birth order effects as statistical noise.
What makes the 2025 findings notable for anyone following the field closely is that they directly contradict the 2015 consensus on agreeableness. The authors addressed this head-on, noting that their results for HEXACO Agreeableness and Honesty-Humility show clear monotonic increases across sibship sizes, in sharp contrast to the earlier Rohrer et al. findings, which showed no systematic increase using the Big Five version of agreeableness.
Part of the explanation may lie in how the two models slice up the same underlying trait space. Big Five agreeableness and HEXACO Honesty-Humility overlap but are not identical, and a trait split across two dimensions in one model can behave differently than the same trait measured as a single dimension in another.
Why the Effects Are So Small and Inconsistent
Three structural reasons explain why birth order keeps producing modest, sometimes contradictory findings rather than the dramatic patterns pop psychology promises.
Shared environment matters less than assumed
Behavioral genetics research consistently finds that personality variation within a family owes more to genetics and to non-shared environment (each child’s unique experiences, friendships, and micro-relationships with parents) than to broad shared-family variables like birth order or family size.
Two siblings raised in the same household with the same parents still diverge substantially in personality, and birth order explains only a sliver of that divergence.
Confirmation bias inflates the perceived effect
People notice birth order patterns that match their expectations and overlook the exceptions. A firstborn who is anxious and disorganized does not update anyone’s mental model the way a firstborn who is a controlling perfectionist confirms it.
This selective attention is well documented in psychology generally and applies directly to how families and casual observers interpret sibling personalities.
Sample size determines whether an effect can even be detected
Personality differences by birth order, where they exist, tend to fall in the d = 0.1 to 0.3 range. Detecting an effect that small reliably requires tens of thousands of participants at minimum, which is precisely why the studies that get taken seriously today, Rohrer’s 20,000-plus participants and Ashton and Lee’s 700,000-plus, dwarf the sample sizes used in mid-twentieth-century birth order research that originally built the theory’s reputation.
Common Misconceptions Worth Retiring
Firstborns are natural leaders. The intellect finding is real, but intellect is not the same as leadership capacity, ambition, or dominance, and no rigorous study has found a reliable firstborn advantage on extraversion or assertiveness.
Only children are maladjusted or spoiled. This stereotype has been tested repeatedly and does not survive contact with data. A 2020 study specifically examining narcissism found no meaningful difference between only children and children with siblings, and the 2025 Ashton and Lee data placed only children close to firstborns on most traits rather than in some uniquely deficient category.
Middle child syndrome is a real diagnosable pattern. The 2025 findings actually cut against the “neglected middle child” stereotype, showing middle-borns scoring highest, not lowest, on cooperation-related traits. If anything, the popular narrative around middle children has the direction backward.
Birth order predicts career success or IQ in any meaningful individual sense. The intellect effect is population-level and small. It shows up reliably in aggregate statistics across hundreds of thousands of people; it is not a basis for predicting any single firstborn’s academic or career trajectory over their younger sibling’s.
What This Means in Practice
For parents, the research is arguably reassuring rather than prescriptive. Birth order is not a lever that determines a child’s personality, and there is no evidence-backed intervention needed to counteract firstborn pressure or middle child neglect as clinical concerns.
What matters far more for personality development, according to the broader developmental literature, is the quality and consistency of parent-child interaction, not the numerical position a child occupies in the sibling lineup.
For employers and recruiters, birth order should carry no weight in hiring decisions. The effect sizes involved are far too small and too inconsistent across studies to justify treating birth order as a proxy for leadership potential, conscientiousness, or team fit.
For anyone drawing personal conclusions from their own family, the honest takeaway is that individual variation swamps birth order effects almost entirely. Two firstborns are more different from each other, on average, than firstborns are from lastborns as a group.
Birth order is a real but minor thread in a much larger fabric woven from genetics, individual relationships, culture, and circumstance, not the deterministic script that a century of pop psychology suggested it was.
