Early life and education

David Jason came into this world on February 2, 1940, in the vibrant city of Edmonton in London, England. Interestingly enough, he was born alongside his twin brother Arthur White, who also pursued a career in acting. 

David’s father, Arthur Robert White, made a living as a porter at the renowned Billingsgate Fish Market, while his hardworking mother, Olwen Jones, hailed from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and worked as a charwoman.  

1951, Jason attended Northfield Secondary Modern School after failing the 11-plus exam. Despite his initial disappointment, he remained determined to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. His older brother’s success greatly influenced this aspiration in the field.

Career

Jason began his television career in 1964 as Bert Bradshaw in Crossroads. Three years later, he co-starred in the children’s comedy series Do Not Adjust Your Set as several characters, including the mock super-hero Captain Fantastic, alongside Eric IdleTerry JonesDenise Coffey, and Michael Palin

Humphrey Barclay was impressed with Jason’s sense of timing and recruited him for Do Not Adjust Your Set. This decision was made to balance out the more intellectual style of Idle, Jones, and Palin. After the show ended in 1969, Jason’s character made a subsequent appearance in the children’s program Magpie on Thames Television.

During the 1970s, Jason appeared in television shows such as The Goodies, The Two Ronnies, and Porridge. Then, in 1981, he landed the role of Derek “Del Boy” Trotter in Only Fools and Horses, ultimately gaining widespread recognition. The show successfully ran 26 episodes over eight series and continues to be regarded as one of the most beloved sitcoms in British TV history.

Personal Life

Jason, a well-known figure, has experienced marriage on two occasions. Initially, he was joined in matrimony with the talented Welsh actress Myfanwy Talog. 

Their relationship endured for an impressive 18 years, during which they shared a home and created countless memories together. Tragically, Myfanwy battled breast cancer, and David stood by her side as a devoted partner throughout her courageous fight until her untimely passing in 1995. 

Jason and Gill Hinchcliffe welcomed their daughter Sophie Mae in 2001 when Jason was 61 years old. Eventually, they married in 2005 and currently reside in Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire. 

After Jason stumbled upon some surprising information in 2022, he learned he had a daughter named Abi Harris. This revelation came as a shock to him, as he had no prior knowledge of her existence. It turns out that Abi was born in 1970 after Jason had a short-lived relationship with actress Jennifer Hill.
