Early Life & Education

Azawi, a celebrated musician, was born in Kampala on February 2, 1996. She spent her early years in the Nakulabye slum as part of a lower-middle-class family. Despite adversity, Azawi‘s mother, Nakamatte Mary, worked tirelessly as a salon owner to support Azawi and her three siblings, including half-sisters and brothers.

Tragedy struck during Azawi‘s senior four years when she lost her father, Walusimbi Samuel. Undeterred by the hardships, Azawi pressed on with her education. She embarked on her academic journey at Buganda Road Primary School and later attended Mother Kevin Primary School in Mukono, where she completed her primary seven education.

Azawi‘s pursuit of knowledge led her to various institutions, reflecting her determination to overcome challenges. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University and attended schools such as St. Henry’s College in Ggangu Masajja, Lubiri Secondary School, London College in Nansana, and St. Janani Luwum Secondary School for her A-levels. At some point, she returned to Lubiri Secondary School, showcasing her resilience and commitment to education.

Career

In 2005, Azawi‘s artistic journey commenced with dance as she joined the renowned troupe called Kika. The rhythm of her passion resonated, leading her to another dance ensemble, Crane Performers. Azawi‘s dedication transcended borders, allowing her to showcase her dance prowess in China.

The turning point arrived in 2011 when Azawi uncovered her innate talent for songwriting. This marked the beginning of a new chapter where she penned her lyrics, infusing her emotions into every word. The culmination of her efforts materialized in 2016, a pivotal year when she encountered Beta, the manager of Eddy Kenzo. With Beta’s guidance, Azawi‘s musical odyssey officially took flight.
