Early Life and Education
Greg Hemphill was born on 14 December 1969 in Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, to parents Edward Hemphill, a chartered accountant, and Anne Hemphill (née Brophy), a teacher. He has a brother named Steve Hemphill.
The family relocated to Montreal, Canada, in the mid-1970s, where he spent much of his childhood, developing a distinctive Scottish-Canadian accent while always identifying strongly as Scottish.
He returned to Scotland in 1988, at age 18, to study at the University of Glasgow, graduating with an MA Honours degree in theatre, film and television. He is of Scottish origin and is Christian.
Career
Greg Hemphill began performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1990, winning the So You Think You’re Funny? award as part of a comedy trio.
He worked in theatre and radio, including presenting Off the Ball on BBC Radio Scotland, before establishing a successful writing and performing partnership with Ford Kiernan.
Their sketch series Chewin’ the Fat (1999–2005) became a major hit on BBC Scotland and introduced many of the characters who later appeared in Still Game.
Still Game, which Hemphill co-created, co-wrote, and starred in as the pensioner Victor McDade, ran from 2002 to 2007 and returned for additional series from 2016 to 2019, becoming one of Scotland’s most popular comedy programmes.
The pair’s production company, Effingee Productions, was involved in the show. Hemphill has also directed and written short films such as Gasping, appeared in theatre productions, and taken acting roles in series including Rab C. Nesbitt, Inspector George Gently, Olga da Polga, and Dinosaur. In 2024, he made a cameo appearance in the Hollywood film Deadpool & Wolverine.
He has co-presented the BBC series Jules and Greg’s Wild Swim with his wife and continues to work across comedy, drama, and presenting.
