Early Life and Education
Eric Heisserer was born in 1970 in Norman, Oklahoma, United States, to parents Margaret L. Heisserer, a senior editor for a publishing company, and Andrew J. Heisserer, a professor of ancient history at the University of Oklahoma. He grew up in an academic household in Norman.
After high school, he worked as a graphic designer on projects related to NASA astrophysicists and contributed writing to tabletop role-playing games such as Cyberpunk 2020.

Eric Heisserer launched his professional screenwriting career when Warner Bros. bought his speculative script The Dionaea House in 2005, based on an online epistolary story he wrote.
His early produced work centred on horror, including the screenplay for the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street (co-written with Wesley Strick), Final Destination 5 (2011), and the prequel The Thing (2011).
He made his directorial debut with the 2013 drama Hours, which he also wrote and which starred Paul Walker.
In 2016, he wrote and produced the horror film Lights Out and achieved critical and awards recognition with Arrival, an adaptation of Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life.”
The screenplay earned him the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, a Saturn Award, and nominations for the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Award.
Heisserer went on to write the Netflix hit Bird Box (2018), starring Sandra Bullock, and co-wrote the superhero film Bloodshot (2020).
In television, he created, showran, and executive produced the Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone (2021–2023), adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels.
