Early life and education

Guy Torry was born in Fort Ord, California, to Sgt. First Class Robert Guy Torry Sr. and Rebecca Torry. His father served in the U.S. Army, while his mother was involved in education and community activism. Guy is the fifth of six children in the Torry family.

When he was four years old, his family moved to Jamaica, Queens, New York, where they lived for about three years before relocating to St. Louis, Missouri.

He served as creator and executive producer of the three-part documentary series Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy, which revisited the influential comedy showcase and its role in the development of Black comedy during the 1990s.
