Wesley French was born on April 13, 1979, in London, Ontario, Canada. He was raised on the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation reserve in southwestern Ontario and is a member of the First Nation.
Growing up between his reserve community and schools away from the reserve shaped his connection to both his Indigenous heritage and the wider Canadian community.
French initially enjoyed hockey and dreamed of playing professionally, but an injury caused him to reconsider his sporting ambitions. He eventually discovered acting and pursued professional training at Toronto’s Ryerson Theatre School, graduating in 2001. He also studied at Carter Thor Studios East.
