Zachary Knight, also known as Zach Galifianakis, was born on October 1, 1969, in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

His mother, Mary Frances, is the director of a community arts centre, and his father, Harry Galifianakis, worked as a heating oil vendor.

With a mixed heritage of Scots-Irish, English, and Greek descent from his paternal grandparents, who were immigrants from Crete, Zach was baptized in the Greek Orthodox faith of his father.

He has two siblings—a younger sister named Merritt and an older brother named Greg. Their family is connected to Washington Post cartoonist Nick Galifianakis, and their uncle, who shares the same name, was a prominent attorney and politician in Durham.
