Zachary Knight, also known as Zach Galifianakis, was born on October 1, 1969, in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

His mother, Mary Frances, is the director of a community arts centre, and his father, Harry Galifianakis, worked as a heating oil vendor.

With a mixed heritage of Scots-Irish, English, and Greek descent from his paternal grandparents, who were immigrants from Crete, Zach was baptized in the Greek Orthodox faith of his father.

He has two siblings—a younger sister named Merritt and an older brother named Greg. Their family is connected to Washington Post cartoonist Nick Galifianakis, and their uncle, who shares the same name, was a prominent attorney and politician in Durham. 


After graduating from Wilkes Central High School, Zach Galifianakis continued his education at Wilkes Community College before transferring to North Carolina State University. At NCSU, he pursued a major in communications.

In August 2012, Zach Galifianakis tied the knot with Canadian charity worker Quinn Lundberg at the UBC Farm in Vancouver. This lovely couple has two sons, with their first son born on September 7, 2013.
