Arora was born in Thane, Maharashtra, India, on October 23, 1973, to Anil Arora, a Punjabi who served in the Merchant Navy, and Joyce Polycarp, a Malyali (from Kerala) Catholic. “Malaika” means “Angel” in Swahili. Arora began dancing training at the age of four. In Thane, she attended ‘Holy Cross Convent High Institution,‘ an all-girls school. When she was age 11, her parents divorced. Her mother relocated to Borla Society in Chembur (another Mumbai suburb) with her two daughters. Arora attended Chembur’s ‘Swami Vivekanand School,‘ which was run by her aunt, Grace Polycarp.
