Zoe Tay Zheng (born January 10, 1968), addressed professionally as Zoe Tay, is a renowned Singaporean actress and former model. She began her career as a model in the 1980s and rose to prominence in the 1990s with her roles in The Unbeatables and The Last Swordman dramas. 

She has won numerous awards for her acting, including the Best Actress award at the Asian Television Awards in 2001.

Early Life & Education

Zoe Tay was born in Singapore on January 10th, 1968, to Teochew’s parents. She was into a family of seven. She is the sixth child in her family. Zoe Tay lost her mother, Madam Wong Pong Chin, in a ghastly motor accident when she was three.

As a result of her death, her father decided to get remarried. Her father’s second marriage produced a daughter named Pong Chin. While her stepmother was a stay-at-home mom, her father worked on a pig farm in Lim Chu Kang. 

Zoe Tay went to Yuan Ching Secondary School after attending Kay Hua Primary School, where she finished her O-level exams. She studied fashion design at the Baharuddin Vocational Institute.

She considered adopting the name “Jenny” when she was 13 because her last name, Zheng, was frequently mispronounced as “Jenny.” But her siblings didn’t like it. Later, Zoe Tay used a dictionary to look up “Zoe.”

Personal Life

Philip Chionh, a former Republic of Singapore Air Force pilot, is Zoe Tay‘s husband. They married in 1995 after a church ceremony and a banquet with a western theme at the Ritz Carlton. 

They got engaged in 1995 while she was at the height of her stardom. Nathan Chionh, Brayden Chionh, and Ashton Chionh are the three sons they had as children.

Career

At 16, Zoe Tay began her career as a model. She received the Model of the Year award in 1987. She received a three-year contract with the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), currently known as MediaCorp, after winning the first Star Search in 1988. She had disliked acting at first, but after appearing in Crime and Passion in 1991, she developed a passion for the industry.

Zoe Tay garnered recognition for her innovative depiction of a pretentious young woman in Pretty Faces. She has won the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste Award every year since the Star Awards were founded in 1994, which is evidence of her popularity. In 1996, she won the Best Actress honor at the annual Star Awards for her work in The Golden Pillow.

In 2004, Zoe Tay became the first actress to win the coveted All-Time Favourite Artiste award. She was the first female artist recruited by MediaCorp to create the coffee table book Zoe’s Coffee Table.
