He transitioned more fully into creative roles by writing screenplays for commercial features such as Amor a Primera Visa (also known as Pulling Strings, 2013), Compadres (2016) and Busco Novio para Mi Mujer. As a producer he was involved with Chronic (2015), which competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Las Hijas de Abril (April’s Daughter, 2017).
Ripstein made his directorial debut with 600 Miles (2015), a tense road drama starring Tim Roth and Kristyan Ferrer that he also co-wrote and produced. The film earned the Best First Feature Award at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival and was selected as Mexico’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He later directed episodes of Narcos for Netflix and created and directed the series Un Extraño Enemigo (An Unknown Enemy).
In recent years Ripstein has continued working across film and television. He has directed episodes and projects including We Are Golden (Somos Oro), La Máquina, Mentiras, The Series and the feature Mexico 86.
