Early Life and Education
Marjane Satrapi was born on 22 November 1969 in Rasht, Imperial State of Iran, to parents Ebi Satrapi, an engineer, and Taji Satrapi, a dress designer.

In 1996, she married Swedish producer, actor, and screenwriter Mattias Ripa; the couple remained together until his death from cancer on 8 April 2025.
She had no children and devoted herself primarily to her art. After her husband’s death, she experienced severe depression and established the Mattias and Marjane Ripa-Satrapi Cinema Foundation to support foreign film students in Paris.
She died on 4 June 2026 in Paris at the age of 56; her family stated that she “died of sadness” a little over a year after losing her husband.
