Brett Ratner was born on March 28, 1969, in Miami Beach, Florida, to Marsha Presman and Ronald Ratner, a businessman. He has a younger brother named Max Ratner.

Ratner attended the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy and Alexander Muss High School in Israel. He graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1986 and later earned a degree from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1990, where he studied film.

He is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, with his father being American and his mother, originally from Cuba, immigrating to the United States. Religiously, Ratner practiced Christianity.

Brett Ratner began his career in the 1990s by directing music videos. While at NYU, he managed and executive-produced the rap group B.M.O.C. and released his first short film, Whatever Happened to Mason Reese?.
