Early Life

John Redburn Young, known by his stage name George Young, was born on the 6th of November in 1946 in Scotland. He was brought to Australia by his family when he was a young child and eventually became an Australian citizen. His father, William Young, worked as a wheel boy in rope works before transitioning to operating machines and saws in an asbestos and cement company. During World War II, William Young enlisted in the Royal Air Force, where he served as a flight engine mechanic.

After the war, William Young worked as a postman and later as a yard man for a builder. George Young‘s mother, Margaret Young, was a stay-at-home mom with the same surname as her husband, born on July 14th, 1913. He was the second youngest of four siblings, with three older brothers named Malcolm Young, Alexander Young, and Angus Young, and a sister named Margaret Horsburgh.

George Young‘s family background and upbringing in Scotland and Australia heavily influenced his music career, which began as the lead guitarist and main songwriter of the iconic Australian band The Easybeats from 1965 to 1968. Later, he co-founded the band Flash and the Pan with Harry Vanda in 1979.

In the early days of their career, they rehearsed in the Villawood Migrant Hostel, where all the band members had a connection. The band’s unique sound and songwriting abilities quickly caught the attention of music enthusiasts worldwide.

After the band split in 1969, George Young and Harry Vanda teamed up and started their musical journey as Vanda & Young. In 1973, the duo returned to Sydney and started working with Ted Albert at his Albert Productions recording studio. Here they honed their craft and rose to the position of in-house producers, working with some of the biggest names in the music industry.

In 1976, George Young started Flash and the Pan, a studio-based duet with Harry Vanda on guitar and keyboards and himself on guitar and vocals. Their singles Hey, St. Peter, and Down Among the Dead Men made it to the top 10 Australian music charts, and the band flourished.

One of the band’s notable songs, Waiting for a Train, featured the powerful vocals of Stevie Wright, a former member of The Easybeats. The song was released in December 1982 and peaked at No. 7 in the UK, No. 15 in Belgium, and No. 26 in the Netherlands when released in Europe in April 1983.
