Early Life and Education
Joel Madden was born on March 11, 1979, in Waldorf, Maryland, to Robin Marie Madden and Roger Paul Combs. His father left the family when Joel was young, after which he and his siblings adopted their mother’s surname, Madden.
He has an older brother, Josh Madden; a younger sister, Sarah Madden; and an identical twin brother, Benji Madden.
Joel was raised as a Pentecostal Christian. He attended La Plata High School in Maryland and became increasingly interested in music during his teenage years.

Joel Madden began pursuing music with his twin brother Benji during their teenage years.
After attending a Beastie Boys concert, the brothers became determined to form a band and eventually joined with Paul Thomas and Billy Martin to create Good Charlotte in 1996.
