Jonah Marais Roth Frantzich (born June 16, 1998) is an American singer and songwriter who is a member of the boy band, Why Don’t We.

The band which is made of five members is signed under Atlantic Records. A self-taught singer and instrumentalist, he and his bandmates, Jack Avery, Corbyn Besson, Zach Herron, and Daniel Seavey, formed the group in 2016.

Since their formation, the group has gone on to release two albums and five EPs. He and his bandmates were nominated in two categories at the 2018 MTV Video Music Award.

Early Life

Jonah Marais was born in the state of Minnesota on the 16th of June 1998.

He was raised in Stillwater city. His parents are Mr. Timothy Frantzich and Mrs. Carrie Frantzich. He is the second child of the family and he has three siblings named Zebulon, Esther, and Svea Frantzich.

He was nicknamed Marais after a town called Grand Marais which his parents used to visit before his birth. He comes from a musically inclined family as everyone is blessed with a good voice and can sing well.

When Jonah became an adolescent, he developed a stronger interest in music and started teaching himself how to sing and play instruments. He performed his first solo stage performance when he was in sixth grade at a talent show. He rendered a piano cover of John Lennon‘s song, Imagine.

By 2014, he had opened an account in YouNow where he began to post covers of some popular songs and songs he composed himself. His songs went viral on the platform, earning him over ten thousand followers by the Summer of 2014. Fueled by his passion for music, he decided to drop out of high school to pursue the craft full time. He was in tenth grade at the time.

Whilst he had been doing music, Jonah Marais was also interested in baseball. He had been playing the sport from a young age and joined the baseball team of his high school during his freshman year. He stopped playing the sport after his mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead, he gave more attention to music in order to cope with the sadness that engulfed his heart at the time.

Jonah Marais attended public elementary, middle, and high schools in Stillwater city, Minnesota.

Since he wasn’t interested in pursuing a college degree, he dropped out of high school.

Career

After leaving high school, Jonah Marais had the opportunity of performing in his first live performance at the 2015 Digifest. He sang in front of over seven thousand thrilled audiences. He participated in the Digitour. This was how his path crossed with his future bandmates, Zach Herron, Corbyn Besson, Daniel Seavey, and Jack Avery, who were pursuing their own solo careers at the time.

He dropped his first single, I Meant It, on the 7th of July 2015. The song was well-received, and this prompted him to shot its video a month after. After months of hard work, he came out with his first extended play (EP). The project titled When The Daylight’s Gone was released in April 2016. Few weeks before that time, he had given his fans a teaser by dropping the single, War Paint, which was the lead track of the EP.

Riding on the wave of his EP’s success, Jonah Marais dropped another hot single in the second half of the year, titled Next Ex-Girlfriend. Days after the release of the song, he confirmed long-time speculation of music bloggers by joining the band, Why Don’t We. His bandmates were his new friends, Zach, Jack, Daniel, and Corbyn. The five artists decided to merge their gifts together so as to create timeless music. Jonah Marais made this decision because he believes that great art is made through a collaborative effort. He officially joined the band on the 27th of September 2016.

Since he joined the band, he has worked on and released two studio albums and five EPs. Alongside his bandmates, he recorded the debut single, Taking You, released to the entertainment of fans on the 20th of October 2016. Their debut EP, Only the Beginning came out a month later – November 25th. Jonah Marais has lent his vocals to four other EP projects namely – Something Different (April 2017), Why Don’t We Just (June 2017), Invitation (September 2017) and A Why Don’t We Christmas (November 2017).

Working with a band helped to build Jonah‘s influence in the music world, as it helped him gain more fans. Which was why he and his bandmates signed a recording deal with Atlantic Records in September 2017. Since he became a popular star, he has embarked on a couple of headline tours.

A hardworking musician, he played his part in ensuring that his band’s albums – 8 Letters and The Good Times and The Bad Ones – exceeded the expectations of fans. Both albums won the band a larger fan base, as music lovers across the world vibe to their songs.
