She has spoken warmly about her mother’s influence, particularly the importance of becoming self-reliant and creating her own path in life.
Lewis grew up in a household where music was constantly present. Her childhood listening included Bob Marley, Johnny Mathis, calypso and other styles, and she has recalled playing Bob Marley records herself while growing up. Music became an important part of her identity from an early age.
Her family lived in North London, and she attended a Church of England school. During her teenage years, she became involved in singing and songwriting.
She wrote her first song at 13, after attending a music workshop at her local youth club. She also participated in singing competitions during her adolescence.
Lewis developed another major interest during her teenage years: football.
Although she grew up in a Tottenham Hotspur-supporting household, she made three appearances for Arsenal Ladies, the women’s football team, during her teenage years.
Her connection to football later resurfaced when she portrayed the captain of a women’s football team in Bend It Like Beckham.
Her early musical experiences eventually brought her into London’s recording scene.
At a party, she met Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot of Curiosity Killed the Cat, who introduced her to the Metamorphosis recording studios on All Saints Road.
There she began performing backing vocals and met Melanie Blatt in 1993. That meeting became the foundation for the group that would eventually become All Saints.
Her religious background also became part of her teenage development. Lewis converted to Catholicism during her adolescence, despite attending a Church of England school.
Career
Lewis began her professional musical journey as a session singer and backing vocalist before co-founding All Saints in 1993.
She initially formed the group alongside Melanie Blatt and Simone Rainford under the name All Saints 1.9.7.5.
After Rainford departed, Nicole and Natalie Appleton joined the lineup, and the group adopted the shorter name All Saints.
All Saints signed to London Records and achieved major international success during the late 1990s.
Their self-titled debut album produced the huge single “Never Ever,” which became a UK number-one hit and earned the group major commercial recognition.
Lewis was an important songwriter for the group and contributed substantially to its distinctive pop and R&B sound.
She continued writing songs for other performers, including co-writing “Black Heart” for Stooshe and “How Ya Doin’?” for Little Mix. In 2019, she also co-wrote the theme music for the Netflix series Turn Up Charlie alongside Idris Elba.
All Saints reunited several times. The group returned for live performances in 2014, released Red Flag in 2016, and followed it by Testament in 2018.
Lewis continued contributing songwriting to the group’s later material.
Lewis returned to solo recording in the 2020s. Her second solo album, Pages, arrived on May 17, 2024, exactly 20 years after Open.
The album included collaborations featuring Self Esteem, Shola Ama and General Levy, alongside songs such as “Miracle,” “Kiss of Life” and “Good Mourning.”
Pages reached No. 50 on the UK Albums Chart, while its singles also registered on the UK charts.
Lewis launched the album during her first solo headlining performance at The Jazz Cafe in London in May 2024. She subsequently appeared at major live events including Glastonbury Festival.
