Auswell Mashaba is a renowned South African engineer, businessman, and the former director of Swifambo Rail. He gained notoriety in 2016 when it surfaced that his company had secured a contentious R3.5 billion contract to provide locomotives to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). 

The contract faced cancellation by PRASA amid allegations of corruption and irregularities in the procurement process. Subsequently, Auswell Mashaba and other Swifambo executives were arrested and faced fraud and money laundering charges.

Born in South Africa, Auswell Mashaba identified his passion for engineering during his academic pursuits there. Raised in a small town by his mother, father, and two younger brothers, Auswell‘s upbringing emphasized the value of education and the dedicated pursuit of one’s calling. 

Noel Mashaba, Auswell Mashaba’s younger brother, holds the position of executive chairman at GladAfrica Group, a multidisciplinary built environment consultancy.

Career

Auswell Mashaba commenced his professional journey as a junior engineer, ultimately reaching the pinnacle of his career as the head of a government agency before retiring in 2002. As a founding director of AM Consulting Engineers (AMCE), a multidisciplinary EPC firm based in RSA, he has overseen the successful execution of significant residential projects. 

Mashaba is the proprietor and director of businesses spanning power and energy, construction, transportation, health and welfare, information and communication technology, oil, tourism, and financial services. Before establishing AM Consulting Engineers, he gained experience in the construction industry with roles at Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO) and V&V Consulting.

Auswell Mashaba invested R27 million in cash for a Limpopo game property, a transaction completed just five days after Prasa’s initial payment to his company. Furthermore, Auswell and Joyce Mashaba‘s company, Clear Bubbles Trading 100, expended R8.4 million in cash on a luxury guesthouse in Waterkloof, Pretoria. 

In February 2014, Mashaba‘s second company, Avraspark, acquired a fourth plot of land near Hoedspruit for R3 million. Additionally, he invested R12 million through Zetacor Six in April 2014 to secure a fifth plot of land.
