Mitchell Elegbe Olusegun (born 14th November 1973), known professionally as Mitchell Elegbe, is a Nigerian entrepreneur born in Edo State, Nigeria.

He is the founder and CEO of Interswitch Limited, a Nigerian company that provides switching and payment solutions.

Interswitch is Nigeria’s first and largest electronic payment company, with over 1,000 employees. It has been ranked as one of Africa’s leading technology companies by the Financial Times and The Economist.

Early Life & Education

Mitchell Elegbe was born on the 14th day of November in 1973. Aged 50 years, he was born and raised in Benin City, the capital of Edo state.

Mitchell Elegbe is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Interswitch, a Nigerian integrated payment and transaction corporation. He graduated from the University of Benin with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

He previously worked at Schlumberger Wireline and Testing and Telnet, an ICT engineering and consulting firm, before founding Interswitch Group in 2002. He is currently the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In 2012, Mitchell Elegbe received the West Africa Business Leader Award from CNBC Africa’s All African Business Leaders Awards (AABLA).

 He got the Harvard Business School Association (Nigeria) Leadership Award in the General Management Category in 2015, and he is an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award winner. Mitchell Elegbe is an African Bishop Desmond Tutu fellow.

Career

Before starting Interswitch Group in 2002, Mitchell Elegbe worked at Schlumberger Wireline and Testing and Telnet, an ICT engineering and consultancy firm. He is currently the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Interswitch was founded four years after his NYSC Service Year.

Telnet, a Nigerian telecommunications company, employed him. His first encounter with an ATM was in Scotland (at the time, there were no ATMs in Nigeria) when the machine accepted his card.

Mitchell Elegbe came up with the idea of developing a system architecture that would enable electronic payments in Nigeria while working on a project to install SWIFT.
