Selamawi Asgedom (born 29 September 1976), known professionally as Mawi Asgedom, is an author and a public speaker. He is a refugee of Ethiopia and Eritrean origin. 

His name can also be pronounced Mawi Asgedom (short form). He was born in Adi Wahla in the province of Tigray, Ethiopia. When he was petite, he got separated from his parents for about two years because of the war in Ethiopia. 

So he fled to Sudan, leaving his parents behind. His parents later found him, and they spent three years in Sudan. 

Mawi Asgedom became both an author and a public speaker. He is the author of “Of Beetles and Angels,” A Boy’s Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard and The Code: The 5 Secrets of Teen Success. 

Both books were based on his story, it’s both inspirational and motivational, because of that, his autobiography, Of Beetles and Angels, was selected by Springfield, Pennsylvania, as their community book, and 2,378 people read it there. 

Day-time television host Oprah Winfrey named her interview of Mr. Mawi as one of her 20 Unforgettable Moments in October 2005.

Of Beetles and Angels was also chosen as the first-ever Evanston, Illinois, citywide reading program with events planned throughout the 2007–2008 school year. 

Waukegan High School even named their Monday advisory Lesson Plan ad “Mawi Mondays,” where students perform different activities relating to Mawi Asgedom. He visited with middle school readers throughout the year.

Mawi Asgedom‘s memoir was also read by the city of Philadelphia and Hatboro-Horsham High School as part of the ‘One Book, One School.’

Mawi Asgedom was born September 29, 1976, in Adi Wahla in the province of Tigray, Ethiopia.

His siblings are Tewolde Asgedom, Mehret Asgedom, Mulu Asgedom and Hntsa Asgedom.
