Early Life and Education
Mike Mignola first saw the light of day on 16 September 1960 in Berkeley, California, United States, grew up in nearby Oakland.
He was raised by parents referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Mignola, has two younger brothers. His early fascination with monsters, the supernatural deepened after reading Dracula as a boy.
He studied illustration at the California College of the Arts, graduating with a BFA in 1982. He is of American origin, was raised Catholic.
Career
Mike Mignola began publishing illustrations in fanzines as a teenager, entered the professional comics industry in 1983 as an inker at Marvel Comics on titles such as Daredevil, Power Man and Iron Fist.
He soon moved into penciling, working on The Incredible Hulk, Alpha Flight, the Rocket Raccoon miniseries.
In the late 1980s he developed his signature style of heavy blacks, angular forms while contributing to higher-profile projects for both Marvel, DC, including Cosmic Odyssey, Gotham by Gaslight, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. He also illustrated the comic adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola‘s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
In 1994 he created Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics, launching a self-contained universe that grew to include B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, Witchfinder, numerous spin-offs, prose novels, short-story collections.
The series earned widespread critical acclaim, commercial success.
Mignola served as production designer on Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, as visual consultant on Guillermo del Toro‘s Blade II, Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He continues to oversee, contribute to the Hellboy Universe while creating additional original works.
